I agree with the speaker that it is groups of people that create history, not famous few individuals. This issue is supported in two respects: one of them is that traditional history study focus too much on elites, and the public is often overlooked, therefore the function of the public cannot be assessed fairly; another respect is that actually the most significant trends are made possible by groups of people. It is true that famous individuals have great influence on the history in that most of them are well known for their revolutionary theories, which inspire the public. It can be easily inferred that a leader is most likely to be one of these famous individuals. For example, the former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, who helped Chinese people walk out of the shadow of "Cultural Revolution" and earn much more money. Deng is famous for his "opening up" policy, which encourages foreign investments. At the same time, Deng changed the mind of most Chinese people: he told them that trying to be rich and improving one's living condition is not sin, while most of Chinese people dare not speak it out then. Therefore, famous individuals do worth studying in history. However, only by studying elites historians cannot get a complete notion of the past. Most of the histories were written by elites, for they had the power to record, while the others, the public, had not. Consider, for example, the history of medieval. At that time, most of the tenants and farmers were illiterate, and they were not allowed to join the work of writing history. The result is that what historians have today for the study of medieval history is merely a history of elites. That is why historians today find difficulty in picturing the medieval world. In short, too much emphasis on individuals is likely to make historians overlooked the overall trends of a society. Moreover, groups of people have greater influence on history, since individuals are not representative for the significant trends. A fitting example is the revolution of Web 2.0. Web 2.0 means anyone who has a computer and an access to the internet is able to share his/her ideas, experiences, and moods with other people, no matter where s/he is. It is even possible for everyone to do some creative work in the era of Web 2.0, such as make a movie and write a novel. The phenomenon of Wikipedia and Youtube reveal that how hugely can a group of people, internet users, change the world. In the past, to be a superstar, one has to sign to a company, and gain popularity though a series of promotion. However in the time of Web 2.0, all one has to do is to upload a video on Youtube, and if one's video is original enough, s/he will have fans and become a superstar on the internet. In fact, Time's Person of the Year for 2006 is "You" - that means, you, in front of a computer screen, are changing the history. In sum, famous individuals do have a great influence of the history because their inspiring theories. Yet the public are more and more important in the history, and surely they should not be overlooked. September 14 Google Chrome用着呢。
